More Information

Definition of Modem Energy

Calls for which a type of energy that is usually associated with modems is detected in the voice path. These calls have in- band audio with the characteristics of modulated modem data, but no distinct modem V.8 or V.8bis startup messages. For example, very old modem protocols and non- standards-based data transmission devices lack a standard modem handshake. These calls are reported as Modem Energy.

Calls Identified as Modem Energy

  • The following calls are identified as Modem Energy:
    • Old, low-speed modems (9600 bps and slower) that do not send a handshake protocol.
    • Modems using V.92 protocol. These modems use a highly abbreviated handshake that is not within the scope of V.8 and V.8bis.
  • The following calls may be identified as Modem Energy:
    • Voice call into a Modem. One-way ‘data’ type energy initiated by the receiving end, but no real data connection. (More likely to be identified as Voice or Modem.)
    • Voice call into a High Speed Fax. One-way ‘data’ type energy initiated by the receiving end. (More likely to be identified as Modem.)
    • Modem call into a Fax. Lots of ‘data’ type energy being passed, but no real communication. (More likely to be identified as Fax.)
    • Fax call into a Modem. Lots of ‘data’ type energy being passed, but no real communication. (More likely to be identified as Fax.)
  • Although extremely rare and unlikely, it is remotely possible that a voice call with an extremely poor connection or a voice call with a significant amount of background noise, such as a call to a machine shop, may be identified as Modem Energy.
